I’m part of a group of artists makers that are creating birdhouses for charity during WeMake’s Open House. All the houses will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting The Right Brain Initiative, a Portland-based arts education advocacy program supporting K-8 students.
The birdhouse design is based on Barad-dAi??r, the ai???Dark Tower,ai??? a fictional place in J. R. R. Tolkien‘s Middle-earth writings and is described in The Lord of the Rings,Ai??The Silmarillion, and other works. It is an enormous fortress of the Dark Lord Sauron, whence he rules the volcanic and barren land ofAi??Mordor. Located in northwest Mordor, near Mount Doom, the Eye of Sauron keeps watch over Middle-earth from its highest tower.
I created my birdhouse with wood from the Rebuilding Center in North Portland and wood from the Oregon coastAi??that had been damagedAi??in a storm, a small flashlight, and a crystal globe from the Gold Door.
