I’m part of a group of artists makers that are creating birdhouses for charity during WeMake’s Open House<\/a>. All the houses will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting The Right Brain Initiative<\/a>, a Portland-based arts education advocacy program supporting K-8 students.<\/p>\n

WeMake Open House<\/p><\/div>\n

The birdhouse design is based on Barad-dAi??r<\/b>, the ai???Dark Tower,ai??? a fictional place<\/a> in J. R. R. Tolkien<\/a>‘s Middle-earth<\/a> writings and is described in The Lord of the Rings<\/a><\/i>,Ai??The Silmarillion<\/a>,<\/i> and other works. It is an enormous fortress of the Dark Lord Sauron<\/a>, whence he rules the volcanic and barren land ofAi??Mordor<\/a>. Located in northwest Mordor, near Mount Doom<\/a>, the Eye of Sauron<\/a> keeps watch over Middle-earth from its highest tower.<\/p>\n

I created my birdhouse with wood from the Rebuilding Center<\/a> in North Portland and wood from the Oregon coastAi??that had been damagedAi??in a storm, a small flashlight, and a crystal globe from the Gold Door<\/a>.<\/p>\n
